Bindi’s Derby for Zara 💜🐴

This year we have a very special format for Zara’s Day fundraising...we are so proud to share the news that Zara’s aunty, Bindi Boshammer, is riding for Zara in the Mongol Derby! 🐎

We are sure many of you have heard of @mongolderby – it’s the longest and toughest horse race in the world, and certainly not for the faint of heart. Alongside the race, Bindi is raising money for the Zara’s Day charities (80%) and local Mongolian herder non-profit organisation, Steppe and Hoof (20%).

It will be a surreal feeling on August 7th, when Bindi will be one of about 45 riders from around the world lining up at the start line of the world’s greatest equine adventure race, for the 1,000km trek across the Mongolian Steppe 🏔️

This is no ordinary horse race; the semi-wild horses are supplied by nomadic herder families and the riders navigate using a GPS and map, surviving on their own skills and wits, living among the herders, and changing steeds every 40km.

To add to the challenge, riders are only permitted 5kg of kit for the race carried in their backpack and saddlebag, and must cross the finish line within 10 days. Strict riding hours mean if they’re not at an urtuu by 7pm, they must find a local family on the steppe to take them in for the night, or camp under the stars and hope their horse doesn’t bolt.

Bindi has been preparing and training for this race for the past two years. This has included a strict gym program, a training camp in Mongolia in 2023, endless kilometres spent in the saddle on her weekends, and learning some Mongolian. What a massive commitment - her dedication is so inspiring! 🤩

We are pleased to announce that $3000 was raised for the Zara’s Day charities last week at Justin & Kate’s first on-property bull sale.

Thank you so much to Stockyard Beef for coming forward to donate 10kg of Stockyard Gold Angus striploin to be auctioned, and to Dion Porter of Fucheng Woodlands, Westmar for purchasing this for $2500. Hopefully the team has been enjoying some amazing steak, for great causes 👏

We also raised another $500 on the day through donations towards the beautiful morning tea and lunch that was provided to guests, so we have now been able to donate $1500 each to the Steve Waugh Foundation and the Royal Flying Doctor Service - QLD Section 🙏

The planning for Zara’s Day 2022 is underway, so keep an eye out for more information soon. If you’d like to donate to the online raffle and auction, now is a great time to give some thought to this, as online donations will be opening in the next few weeks. We hope to again raise incredible life-changing funds for the Zara’s Day charities in Zara’s memory 💜

We are humbled to have been awarded the RFDS Local Heroes for the Roma region, as an acknowledgement of the support Zara’s Day has provided to the Flying Doctor 💜

We are one of nine finalists across Queensland, and voting closes this Sunday 27th February (link in bio).

One winner will receive a $7500 grant to promote healthcare in their region, courtesy of Ergon Energy Retail 🙏

Today is PKS Awareness Day ❤️🖤

Everyone thinks their child is one in a million. Zara was actually 1 in 15.4 million. She was one of less than 500 reported cases of Pallister Killian Syndrome in the world 🌎

Given how exceptionally rare PKS is, I was quite surprised when I was recently contacted by another mum…her baby daughter has just been diagnosed with PKS. She lives within a few hours of us, and her daughter was also born in Toowoomba like Zara.

I don’t know what the chances are of this, but I am so thankful that as a result of sharing our story and because of Zara’s Day, she knew of me and felt comfortable to reach out for support and guidance. I am always open to be contacted by anyone who might be on a similar journey 💜

◽️ PKS Fact 1:
Pallister Killian Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs sporadically during conception, it is neither hereditary nor environmental.
PKS is a result of four short arms (as opposed to the typical two) on chromosome 12 - hence 04/12 being recognised as PKS Awareness Day. It is a mosaic syndrome, which means that not all cells that contain chromosome 12 will be affected.

A beautiful gesture 💜

Thank you to our friends Alistair, Nellie, Arlow and Digby Brown, who organised their own fundraiser for Zara’s Day at their school, St Colman’s in Home Hill, North Queensland.

On Friday the school dressed in purple for Zara, and enjoyed purple cupcakes. The Brown boys spoke to the school about little Zara, and Zara’s Day, and they explained what the funds are being raised for. They also created this beautiful poster 🥰

The school raised $170 for the Steve Waugh Foundation, and we are so grateful for this beautiful gesture in not only helping to support our cause, but also in helping to increase awareness of rare disease, and to assist in developing understanding and compassion in others. Thank you to the Brown family, and everyone at St Colman’s for their support of Zara’s Day 💜💜💜
