Zara will forever be part of our family, and the gifts she gave us will stay with us always. It is because of our experience with Zara that we now have a purpose to help make a positive difference in the lives of others affected by rare disease and life-limiting conditions.

The Story of Zara's Day

Our beautiful baby Zara was with us for almost seven months, and we hold a deep gratitude for the blessings she brought to our lives. Zara's time with us, and the journey we travelled with her, was both challenging and life-changing. We have been openly sharing our story, in the hope that it can help others in some small way.

Zara will forever be part of our family, and the gifts she gave us will stay with us always. It is because of our experience with Zara that we now have a purpose to help make a positive difference in the lives of others affected by rare disease and life-limiting conditions.

We discovered this purpose soon after Zara gained her angel wings on the 2nd of November 2020. With the support of family and friends, we held "Zara's Day" in our garden on the afternoon of her funeral on the 16th of November.

Combined with a GoFundMe page, and an online auction held by Wattle & Twine, the event raised a total of $150,000 for the Steve Waugh Foundation, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (QLD) and enabled the purchase of two high flow oxygen facilities for our local Miles Hospital. Kate's vision to continue this work in Zara's honour has only strengthened over the time since we lost Zara, and our plan for this year is to hold an online auction in October to raise life-changing funds for the Steve Waugh Foundation.

The mission of the Steve Waugh Foundation is to enhance the lives of children and families affected by a rare disease. They help improve quality of life through providing grants for therapies, treatment and equipment, and provide "somewhere to turn" for these families.

This is a cause very close to our hearts. Zara was born with an extremely severe and rare disease, Pallister Killian Syndrome (PKS). PKS has no known cause nor cure, and it is a life-limiting condition with many medical and developmental challenges. Zara was 1 in 1.3 million diagnosed with PKS in Australia, and 1 in 15 million worldwide.

The Foundation is a support that we would have needed to lean on if Zara was still with us, and it’s a cause we are passionate about. Life with a child with a rare disease can be incredibly tough, isolating and challenging on many levels. There are limited supports available for those who are walking this hard road, and the cost of equipment and therapy is significant and ongoing. The work the Foundation does truly is life-changing, and it’s our privilege to raise awareness and fundraise in Zara’s legacy.

In addition to the online auction, we will hold an online raffle for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section). The RFDS provides incredible life-saving services to rural and remote communities. Zara and Kate flew with them twice (from Miles to Brisbane), to quickly access the high level of support required at Queensland Children's Hospital.

We are incredibly grateful to those who have supported us, and continue to support us, in honouring and remembering Zara. Thank you for sharing this journey with us. Together we are ensuring that her life will continue to make a difference in the lives of many others for a long time to come.

With gratitude,
Kate, Justin & Theo Boshammer
